Preston has been in drum education for over 20 years. He has been a Senior Lecturer and Deputy Head of Drums at BIMM for over 18 years. He was a lecturer at ATM in Brighton and is also a Mentor with South West Music School in South Devon as well as Director of Music at Nicks Music Studios in Hove.

Preston moved to the UK back in 1996 is originally from New Zealand (Aotearoa). He established himself in the London Music scene playing jazz. blues, rock and RnB. His career was mainly playing with James Hunter at this time and touring extensively through the UK and Europe. He is a Universal Music Artist and was signed to Ruff records in Germany. Preston Studied with the world renown Jim Blackley (Canada) and Allan Cox (UK), Jim Chapin (USA) as well as Rex McCloud and Frank Gibson Jnr (NZ).

He has performed and recorded with artists such as James Hunter (Daptone Recording Artists, Van Morrison), Bap Kennedy, Camille O’Sullivan, Violla Wills, Sam Walker, Astrid Williamson, Gordan Russell (Dr Feelgoods), Steve Thompson, Jimi Stewart (Hearing Aid Beige), Sorting Room Studios (Residential Session Drummer), and is a signed artist with Universal Recording.

Preston has had students go on to be very successful musicians and band leaders in their own write, such as Ben Thompson “The Two Door Cinema Club”, Dougal Taylor “Vels Trio”, Sam Morris “Fickle Friends”, Chris Hardwick, James Stewart (Vader, Written in Waters, Divine Chaos), Adam Pitts (Lawson), Demelza Mather (The Wytches/MATHER), Deborah Knox-Hewson (Charlie XCX), Alex Lowe to name a few.

Preston now resides in South Hams in Devon and is now focusing on his private teaching practice to help aspiring drummers become the best they can be. As well as a private teacher in drum education Preston also established the highly successful Tiki Drums Company in 2010.
